Learn more about EMV

EMV (Europay, MasterCard and VISA) is here for our Harvester Financial Credit Union VISA cards and Debit cards. Some vendors have already changed over to enabling EMV chips in their terminals, but not all vendors are ready.

EMV cards are accepted globally and are more secure.

What is EMV?

EMV (Europay, MasterCard and VISA) is a special chip that is inserted into your debit or credit card. When this chip is inserted into the bottom of the terminal face up. It stays in there longer because the chip communicates with the terminal for authorization. The chip has been proven to help prevent fraudulent transactions for transactions that do not occur online.

How will I still be safe for online purchases with my EMV chip card?

Before making any purchase with any debit or credit card, please follow these tips to help prevent fraudulent use of your debit or credit card:

  • Make sure you have current virus software. Make sure it is up to date and frequently scan your computer for viruses to reduce the risk of a virus on your computer.
  • If you use a mobile device, make you have some kind of virus protection on that as well. Make sure you conduct some research on the app to make sure it is effective and secure.
  • Make sure the lock key is in the browser area on any site that you are conducting payments on. It should flash or stay green in that bar. This shows that the site is secure.
  • When conducting online transactions, do not do it on a public computer or in a public place with several people around. You do not want others viewing what you are typing in on your computer while purchasing something or a public computer may not be safe.
  • All of these things can help prevent against fraud for online purchases.
